Federal Minimum Wage Increases

By Michael Progar

ADVERTISEMENTS
As expected, President Bush signed a bill that amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to increase the federal minimum wage in three annual steps. The minimum wage has been at its current $5.15 per hour since September 1, 1997. Thirty states presently have minimum wages greater than the federal minimum wage.

The first increase will take effect on July 24, 2007, increasing the minimum wage to $5.85 per hour. A complete summary of the scheduled increases is below:

  • July 24, 2007 - $5.85 per hour
  • July 24, 2008 - $6.55 per hour
  • July 24, 2009 - $7.25 per hour
The new required Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Minimum Wage Poster may be viewed and printed from the U.S. Department of Labor's website.
