The Pew Research Center reports that one in 100 adults in the U.S. is serving time in prison or jail right now. Those numbers breakdown to about: 1 in 36 Hispanic adults, 1 in 15 African-American adults, & 1 in 9 African-Americans between 20 & 34 are behind bars. The Associated Press also has an article available here. WaPo’s post is here. About1 in 600 people in prison are under a sentence of death. Put another way, SL&P relates to about 600 times more people than we do.
I should note that Megan McArdle, here, offers another reason why she rocks on this subject.
