The politics of death, the Boshington corridor edition: A new study in Maryland shows that the death penalty costs Md. more than life term, indeed, 37 million per execution. The Baltimore Sun notes, “The death penalty has cost Maryland taxpayers at least $186 million more in prosecuting and defending capital murder cases over two decades than would have been spent without the threat of execution, according to a study to be released today.” [Bashman] In Virginia, Gov. Kaine has vetoed a bill that would have expanded the number of death eligible offenses. The Richmond Times-Dispatch notes: “House Bill 933, sponsored by Del. C. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, and Senate Bill 560, sponsored by Sen. Mark D. Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, would have repealed the “triggerman rule” — which stipulates that only the person who commits a capital murder is eligible for the death penalty...continue to full post
