Medellin on hold from the SCOTUS

The SCOTUS is holding the execution with a stay appearing more and more likely as each moment passes. The death warrant expires at 12 pm local time, or 1 am EST: he U.S. Supreme Court tonight considered the appeal of Mexican-born condemned prisoner Jose Medellin as he faced execution in Huntsville. Medellin claims he was denied treaty-guaranteed help from the Mexican consulate when he was arrested for the 1993 rape and slayings of 2 Houston girls. The victims were 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena and 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman. His execution, which could have occurred just after 6 p.m. (central time), was delayed while justices reviewed his appeal. The death warrant remained in effect until midnight.
