Under the Heading: ?What Could Possibly Go Wrong??

As a fish eater, this news was of interest: the FDA is considering allowing a new genetically enhanced salmon to be sold in our local supermarkets. Scientists have developed a growth hormone which makes salmon grow faster as it causes their system, which naturally only produces growth hormone at certain times of the year, to produce growth hormone all year around. ?The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an on switch for the hormone, according to the company.?

And, those who stand to profit from this move argue that no one even needs a label saying that the fish you are buying at your local Piggly Wiggly ® is genetically engineered.  “This fish is identical to the traditional food,” maintained Stotish. “The label could even be misleading because it implies a difference that doesn’t exist.”

Of course. What could ever go wrong with this plan? We are going to have a governmental regulatory body approve it, right? That makes it safe and guarantees no awful environmental side effects, right? Oddly, some silly environmentalists are not getting on board with this program. ?Because the altered fish has never been eaten before, they say, it could include dangerous allergens, especially because seafood is highly allergenic. They also worry that the fish will escape and intermingle with the wild salmon population, which is already endangered.?
