I'm on my way to Turkey, where I'll be speaking some of the regulators and academics associated with the capital markets board, largely about the Basel Committee and co's latest efforts. China chose to model its already quite active antitrust statute on Europe's, and for financial regulation, Turkey will surely be tempted more by European approaches than American ones, if they are in the market for a legal transplant.
It's interesting because this is exactly the sort of thing that the Basel Committee is meant to make somewhat less important - if every country has the same minimum standards, with narrow departures for local reasons, than the choice to follow EU or US financial regulation shouldn't be very fraught, or interesting. Given the delays in implementation of the second Basel Capital Accord in the US, though, I'm not sure that we're there yet.
