: The Yin BlogWhy did TSA spend so much money on the backscatter scanners?
By Tung Yin
I flew home from LAX to Portland yesterday and approached the security checkpoint with some degree of dread, since LAX employs the backscatter scanners. As between being irradiated or groped, I was going to opt for the latter, but obviously I wasn't looking forward to it. And indeed, I saw the RapiScan scanners lodged behind the traditional metal detectors. . . .
Yet, no one was using them. We all went through the metal detectors as usual, and that was it.
I'm not complaining, exactly, but why did TSA spend so much money on these things if it's not even going to use them? Can TSA get a refund?
