The Results of America's First Constitutional Coup D'etat

By Robert Justin Lipkin

ADVERTISEMENTS
The past seven years will be noted as resulting from the first genuine coup d'etat in American politics.  No I do not mean that the military marched flag: into he nation's capital, seized the president and elected leaders and began to govern.  In the United States, coups have more insidious. Disparate causal factors conspire to seat a president who arguably never garnered a majority of the electorate and who then proceeded to trash the Constitution, brutalize the economy, and single-handled helped cast our great nation as a pariah to the world community. The causes of this coup were the United States Supreme Court, Ralph Nader, fixing the vote, and a complicitous media. The result of this coup is reported here. And the individuals placed in power by this coup remain in power and continue to disgrace the nation.  What kind of political culture permits the perversions of its noble ideals?
