: The Faculty LoungeFound Property
By Calvin Massey
Property professors who teach the law of finders will find this story interesting and a bit heartwarming. An old lady stashes her life savings of $10,000 in a cracker box from Whole Foods, then decides she wants to return the other identical box she had purchased. She mistakenly brings the box with the bills back to Whole Foods, which then places the box back on the cracker shelf. The box is purchased, the purchaser finds the $10,000, and contacts Whole Foods, which has also been contacted by the elderly woman, who is naturally distraught over her mistake. All's well that ends well: the cash is back in the hands of the True Owner. We don't know how Whole Foods handled the refunds for the "crackers." Happy New Year!
