Lewis Hamilton Wins Formula One Driver Championship

Lewis Hamilton

Some of you may recall a post I wrote last year about a young British racing driver named Lewis Hamilton.  Handpicked by Mercedes McLaren team principal Ron Dennis, Hamilton was a rookie in perhaps the most technologically advanced and competitive racing series on the planet ? Formula One.
At the time, Hamilton, who is biracial, was the first driver of African descent in the elite racing series.  He was also a very talented rookie driver who nearly won the Driver?s Championship  — a prize given to the driver who has the best record of race wins/finishes for the entire season.  He missed winning the championship by a single point.

Yesterday, Lewis Hamilton became the youngest driver in history to win the Formula One racing series? Driver?s Championship ? winning by a single point.  He is also the first driver ?of color? to win the championship.

Although not particularly popular in the United States, Formula One racing has a loyal, international following.  Millions of fans around the world follow the ups and downs of Formula One.  Not surprisingly, Hamilton?s accomplishment continues to reverberate around the globe.   News accounts of this historic moment in motor racing can be found here and here.  Click here for some interesting facts about Hamilton.

Congratulations, Lewis.   Richly deserved.
