Giving Thanks (Robert Katz)

By Lawrence Solum

ADVERTISEMENTS

Katz On this Thanksgiving Day, I would like to express my gratitude to Robert Katz.  Mr. Katz was my teacher for American History at Mark Keppel High School in 1970-71.  He was an amazing teacher; indeed, I think that it is only after I have taught for 25 years that I fully appreciate his genius as a teacher.  I then took for granted the ambition of Katz's approach to American history.  I know realize that reading original articles from scholarly journals is not a common approach in high school history classes; I still have a vivid memory of reading Charles Beard's An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States.  I also remember that Katz organized class field trips to a local college library to enable his students to conduct serious research for class papers.  He was an inspiring teacher, a shaping influence on my intellectual development, and a role model for my own pedagogy.  Thank you, Mr. Katz!
