I hope that someone at each law firm that:
1. gives incoming associates the option of deferring for a year or
2. gives current associates a one year sabbatical
tracks the development of such associates and their career trajectories.  Are those that are prone to starting immidiately after graduation or not taking a year off from practice most likely to make it to partner?  Are these the people most likely to burn out because law practice is a marathon and not a sprint?  Are such associates more likely to find good strategic opportunities and go in-house (the better to refer work back to the mother ship)?
