: The Faculty LoungeCrossing over into the world of the grouchy
By NRapoport
So, I've been reading my student evaluations (for a related post, see here), and one disturbing theme I've noticed is the desire of some students in my upper-level classes to have me "go over" the readings. Not "work more problems" (I teach problem-based courses), which I'd understand--"go over" the readings.
Am I turning into a grouch if (1) I don't want to go over the readings, just to "go over" them, although I don't mind explaining confusing parts and (2) I'm getting increasingly distressed about student illiteracy, even among very bright students? Shouldn't they struggle with the readings? Learn basic spelling and grammar? Understand the rules for apostrophes?
I'm glad that grading's over for the semester. For related musings, see here.
