Conference Announcement: Workshop on Punishment & Justice

By Lawrence Solum

ADVERTISEMENTS

From Thom Brooks:

Workshop on Punishment and Justice
Friday May 21st
Cathleen Edie Room, Abedare Hall, Cardiff University

Questions about the preconditions on theories of punishment have been raised in recent philosophical literature. In particular, the question of what the conceptual connections between social justice and punitive justice might be has come under consideration: must the state ensure a certain level of social justice if it is to justly punish? Can the state justly punish if disadvantage persists?

This series of workshops will bring together theorists from UK institutions working on the topics of punishment and political obligation. The conceptual relationship between social justice and punitive justice will be scrutinised, as will the implications of this for penal policy in liberal democracies.
