Dodge School Board Member Charged With DUI In Accident

By M. Brandon Smith

Driving responsibly is critical. When you don't drive responsibly, you are not only endangering your own life, but the lives of countless others as well. A Dodge County school board member, however, allegedly didn't take that advice to heart. So what exactly happened?

Records show that a Dodge County school board member was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol this week after she was involved in a traffic accident. According to an Eastman County Police Department accident report, she was driving south on Ogden Street in the rain Tuesday just before 10 p.m. when she hit an unattended tractor-trailer parked on the right side of the road.

The school board member explained her alleged erratic driving by telling police that she saw a cat on the left side of the road. She notified the police that she thought the cat might run out in front truck, and did not see the tractor-trailer, which was parked improperly, according to the report.

The field sobriety test revealed that the school board member's BAC was measured at 0.152 That measurement exceeds the legal limit in Georgia, where a driver is considered legally intoxicated at 0.08. Attempts to reach the school board member for comment were unsuccessful.

The school board member's alleged actions were incredibly dangerous. If the charges are accurate, the school board member made an egregious and dangerous decision. Driving while intoxicated is both dangerous and selfish. Accidents can occur even when alcohol isn't involved. When alcohol is involved, however, the likelihood of an accident increases substantially.
