Thomas Doss Involved In Fatal Car Accident-What Can We Learn From This Tragic Event?

By M. Brandon Smith

ADVERTISEMENTS

A car accident can happen on any given day. Those accidents can prove fatal and can involve drivers both old and young. A 16-year-old high school soccer player, who had transferred to Armuchee High School only a few weeks ago, was recently killed in a tragic accident.

The student had just left soccer practice around 4:30 p.m. when the Toyota Camry he was driving was struck and crushed by a red pickup truck. According to police, the truck was driven by 65-year-old Thomas Doss. The teen died at the scene. The truck driver was attempting to move into the turning lane of U.S. 27 but never stopped.

The investigation is still ongoing but the police have been able to reach some conclusions.

'The back end of the Doss's truck came up, and the Toyota went under it,' Floyd County police officer Rusty Williams said. 'The undercarriage of his truck did a lot of damage to the top of the Toyota. 'The truck picked up the back end, and the Toyota continued going forward, and went approximately 60 feet away from the point of impact,' Williams said.

No charges had been filed as of late Friday. Another pickup truck, a Chevrolet that was behind the teen's car, was also struck. The unidentified driver was treated and released at Floyd Medical Center. Doss was taken to Redmond Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Tragic accidents involving teens are never easy and this instance is no exception.

'In a school setting, it's one of the hardest things they face,' Burris said about the tragedy when contacted Friday night. 'We'll have counselors and social workers at the school on Monday.'

The teen had his whole life ahead of him but the tragic accident robbed him and his family of his future. Accidents like this should serve as notice for drivers everywhere just how crucial it is to drive safely. Failing to do so can result in irreversible consequences.
