Prior Salmonella Illnesses in Maine

By David Babcock

ADVERTISEMENTS

The recent announcement by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention of a Salmonella outbreak at an assisted living facility stands in contrast to a relative lack of Salmonella incidents in the state's recent history.  In fact, in discussing positive tests for Salmonella enteritids at egg farms in the State, Dr. Hoening of the Maine Department of Agriculture reported that as of September of last year, that there had been no human outbreaks of Salmonella centered in Maine in more than 20 years.

It is the case however, that Maine residents have been among those sickened in multi-state Salmonella outbreaks centered outside the state in the past.   According to the Maine CDC, Maine residents were among those sickened in the PCA peanut-butter outbreak, and the 2008 Malt-o-Meal outbreak.
