Blog of the Week(end): SC Bankruptcy and Consumer Law Blog

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

We try to stay away (some) from the ad-blogs, those serving their writers rather than audiences. Blogs from big firms that do little but self-announce, blogs from newspapers that do little but verify the fact that "we have a blog."

The SC Bankruptcy & Consumer Law Blog is written by a private lawyer, Sheryl Schelin. But she's making less than most of you -- according to one post, Why I Do What I Do, she walked away from $70,000/year to take care of her ailing mother and start her own practice. But she specifically chose bankruptcy and consumer law, which to that point had not been her specialty, to deal with what she saw as a greater problem than her former practice of airport law.

Sheryl Schelin herself has experience with debt. Lawyers don't like to talk about their own debt because it makes bar associations itchy. The fact is, few of us graduate from law school without owing someone some money. I remember paying close to $100 (back in the day, even!) for a book entitled "Debt!" It was all about creditors' rights. Maybe they have their own bill of rights, who knows. At the time it struck me as funny (in a sad way) because I had no experience as a creditor, but knew a thing or two (as do we all) about being a creditee.

Back to the blog! There's plenty of good original consumer information on the site, particularly for anyone interested in the recent subprime crises. She links to interesting external information, too. The blog is updated pretty regularly. The blogroll of consumer and bankruptcy links is thorough without being overwhelming. The layout is easy on the eyes, as is the font (but you'd better like red). Plus, it was the best South Carolina blog I could find!

Enjoy and may the week ahead be a great one!
