Foursquare Brainstorming

By admin

ADVERTISEMENTS

OK, I’m just brainstorming here and maybe I am a little late to the party and not fully armed for brainstorming but here’s some ideas (Maybe some of you have thought of and implemented these already, so tell us in the comments).

Number one:

I see that all universities in North America have badges on Foursquare now. I must say that I am amazed at how motivational I find these game style rewards. Maybe I’m shallow but I like seeing progress on my learning this way. So I wonder how many university libraries have made themselves a badge, and even some other badges to reward their students for something like orientation week activities? Just finding the library’s (or multiple libraries) locations is a start!

Number Two:

I love that the National Archives (US) has engaged Foursquare badges too. I know people collect visits to presidential libraries like baseball and football fans collect visits to the stadiums. I wonder if people would collect visits to every branch, or special collections or departmental libraries? This is certainly something that museums like the Smithsonian could copy. And just think what the major libraries in a field like sports (Cooperstown, Hall of Fame, etc.) or Music (R&R Hall of Fame) could do too. It worth investigating and giving it a try.

New from NARA: Foursquare Users Can Now Check In At National Archives Locations (incl. Presidential Libraries) February 2, 2011
The National Archives, including the Presidential Libraries & Museums, today joined Foursquare, a location-based social media network that enables users to share tips and other information at geographic locations nationwide. With the help of Foursquare, the National Archives is reaching out to people where they live and where they visit, encouraging Archives fans to leave tips coast to coast! (Thanks ResourceShelf)

Number Three:

Sadly there is just one or two badges that relates to libraries and books – Bookworm Bender.
Surely we can do better than that. Can ALA, CLA or some state/provincial association get one the game. This seems like the ideal place to make a badge using the international library symbol:

Oh, and I also want to check in to Foursquare at all of the conferences I go to! (Yeah, I’m weird but it’s a way to learn about the geo-centric web. If place wasn’t important we wouldn’t need branches, right?

Libraries are about way more than books!
