Illinois Salmonella Outbreak Update: 43 confirmed cases in 10 counties

By Drew Falkenstein

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Illinois Department of Health just updated the figures in the Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts on sandwiches from Jimmy John's restaurants:

Many people who have become ill recently with Salmonella, reported eating alfalfa sprouts at Jimmy John's restaurants in 10 Illinois counties - Adams, Champaign, Cook, DuPage, Kankakee, Macon, McHenry, McLean, Peoria and Will. Since Nov. 1, 2010, the Department has received confirmed reports of 43 Illinois residents and one Wisconsin resident with Salmonella serotype I 4,5, 12,i- who ate at a Jimmy John's. Earlier reports included pending cases, but these numbers are of confirmed Salmonella cases only. Information on this outbreak will be updated at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, except Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Notably, the 43 cases referenced in this report are 3 less than earlier reports, and one county has been added since the original announcement as well.  There is also a Wisconsin resident who is now counted as a case, though it is unclear exactly where the person became infected.  The 43 cases included in this announcement are confirmed Salmonella serotype I 4,5, 12,i-, and do not include likely cases who have not yet been confirmed as part of the outbreak.  So these numbers are likely to grow.
