Guest Post :: Dealing With Depression During the Holidays

By J. Benjamin Stevens

ADVERTISEMENTS

Depression is an all too common problem for too many people, and it can be worse during the holiday season. It's at almost epidemic levels around the world. It's also a result of physical rundown, often including stress over long periods. Nutrition, exercise and even a change of lifestyle are some of the things you can do to help yourself. Even basic things which appeal to the individual need for improvement during depression, like buying dresses online or taking up a pastime you enjoy can make a big difference.

Depression, exercise and food basics

Depression, at any level, is a horrible experience. It's a result of hormonal imbalances which need to be corrected. The fact is sometimes overlooked that the body also needs to rebuild, mentally and physically, and it's the physical aspects of rebuilding which are the easiest to handle yourself.

Depression is common in people that overwork. The body loses the resources it needs to manage the complex hormonal system, the immune system is under-nourished, and recovery, naturally, is compromised. The result is that depression becomes entrenched. The body can't build itself back up. Things like alcohol and drugs also reduce the rate of recovery, stealing resources from the body.

Exercise is another factor. A sedentary lifestyle actually promotes depression. People bedridden after operations have often been reported as suffering from depression, mainly because the enforced inactivity affects the body very negatively.

How to rebuild, naturally, and at your own pace

Changing diet and the habits of a lifetime isn't easy. It requires some determination and patience, but it's a good general approach to undoing the damage of depression and get on to the right track for recovery.

These are the basic steps:

Diet

  • Get rid of the junk food, entirely. The low value nutrients aren't much help anyway, and you do need much better quality food.
  • Avoid alcohol, which is actually a depressant, and doesn't mix well with antidepressants, sometimes causing dizziness and nervous system reactions.
  • Drink water with meals to improve digestion and liver function. Without water your body can't process your food properly. Water is used for metabolizing useful things like proteins and the minerals required to help rebuild people suffering from depression.
  • Eat as much fresh food as possible, particularly vegetables, to get a reliable balanced diet working for you. Vegetables and fruit provide essential trace elements which the body needs for repairs.

Exercise

  • Exercise needs to be managed realistically. If you're not physically fit, you will need to develop your fitness levels in stages.
  • Do not overdo your exercises, particularly in the early stages, because you can lose the value of your food.
  • Basic aerobic exercises, sports, and other fundamental exercises are enough to improve your oxygenation and fitness levels quite quickly.
  • The best approach is to concentrate on regular exercise, where you have the time to complete all exercises and get the full benefits.
  • Getting professional assistance from a gym is a very good idea. The trainers can give you a program of exercises designed to build fitness and ensure you can do so safely, without strain or risk.

?Depression can be beaten, and you can do a lot to help yourself beat it. Just think of a life without the horrors of depression, and you've got all the motivation you'll ever need.
