: Thoughts from a Management LawyerWatershed LLP is Hiring
By Michael Fitzgibbon
We ?flicked the switch? on our firm 11 months ago and the time is right (probably a little past right actually) for us to hire.
Construction of our new office is complete, we?ve moved in and we're looking to add an associate to our ranks.
We set up our firm because we wanted to practice law but not within a billable hour model. We were and remain committed to doing things differently. Progressively and incrementally moving away from the billable hour model and offering value-based and transparent alternatives has, from the outset, been our goal. We've had our critics who said we were making a mistake, but this past year has unquestionably shown us that there is a different (and we?d argue better and certainly more fun) way of practicing law.
In the billable hour environment, at some point, we start to measure our worth as a lawyer in 6-minute increments and by whether we have or have not met our target. Clients don?t measure our value by how many hours we spend on their file so why should we? Yet, too often, we (lawyers) equate value with time and that's just plain wrong. Granted it's easy, convenient, and administratively manageable for the firm, but it's still mistaken.
So, what we?re completely committed to doing is creating an environment where we can work hard (and we work really hard), have fun, collaborate fully and openly, fulfill our own personal and professional goals and do some really good work with fantastic clients. We're happy with what we've achieved over the past year and we've set even more challenging goals for ourselves for the coming year.
We?re looking for someone who is a 2 to 4 year call, with labour and employment law experience gained at full-service firm or at a boutique, who is entrepreneurial, creative and willing to work hard, but in a different and highly collegial and collaborative way,
If you're interested (or know of someone who might be interested) in exploring this further, send me your resume in confidence. You can email it to me directly at mfitzgibbon(at)watershedlaw.com.
