: National Eminent Domain BlogEffort to Redevelop Riverfront
By Alan Ackerman
As with so many other communities, development directors find the former industrial riverfronts as the most viable place for immediate and successful redevelopment. As with so many other communities, Tulsa has the difficulty of also having the policy of not simply acquiring ongoing businesses for redevelopment. This is a difficult situation, for private rights must be protected, yet, cities want to see their waterways redeveloped in an aesthetically attractive fashion.
The four parcels on the west bank are the same areas that drew interest several years ago from the developers of Branson Landing in Missouri.
Bunney and Westcott said developers including the group from Missouri have recently expressed interest in the area.
The parcels include three owned by the city and one, Mid-Continent Concrete, that is privately owned by a Mexican company.
The city can only solicit development for the publicly owned land. Any deal for the concrete plant would be worked out between a developer and the plant owners, officials said.
Westcott said he opposes the city exercising condemnation to acquire the concrete plant.
