Perth Amboy Faces Gas Pipeline

By Alan Ackerman

ADVERTISEMENTS

Jason Goldstein, on behalf of Liberty Natural, explains that parties may intervene in the FERC proceeding. This does not fully respond to the situation of whether people who will face the pipeline will really have an opportunity to be involved in the decision making process. The reality is that Liberty will probably succeed with all its requests and plans. On the other hand, Mr. Goldstein recognizes that there are revised plans, such as those plans moving away from a location near a school to other parts of the city.

FERC is not a perfect entity in which to fulfill one's individual Due Process desires. Yet, the process is one in which there is not a direct delegation of the power to require to the utility itself. Individuals have a right to participate in the decision making to the extent that FERC allows, which is a complete and full hearing.

Later in the article, in app.com, there is a commentary how taxes will be paid to the local community.

The reality is that the amount of taxes is relatively minimal compared to the affect on the community itself.

Jason Goldstein, chief operating officer for applicant Liberty Natural Gas LLC, said seeking a motion to intervene is a way for the city to be continuously informed from the agency side about the $850 million project.

Goldstein, however, said revised engineering plans call for the pipeline to be moved to the western side of the NJ Transit rail lines, closer to the vacant Gerdau Ameristeel property, and away from the school.

The onshore pipeline is designed to provide up to 2.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas to markets in New Jersey, New York and surrounding areas.

Goldstein said the pipeline will be taxed and that each community impacted would receive tax dollars. In addition, he said, workers will be purchasing goods and services in Perth Amboy and the other towns during construction. He said a permanent building to control the pipeline is also planned in Perth Amboy, which he said would foster economic development in the city.
