: The Yin BlogConfessions of a semi-disloyal Cal grad
By Tung Yin
I have a confession to make. Although I love the California Golden Bears, I was kind of okay with their 15-13 loss to the Oregon Ducks this past weekend.
Cal's season was pretty much wrecked already, and while upsetting the #1 ranked team would have its own charm, it's not the same (to me) as knocking USC out of the championship race. It's not that I have adopted the Ducks now that I live in the state of Oregon; in truth, I prefer the Oregon State Beavers to the Ducks for a number of reasons (more courage in scheduling tough non-conference opponents; Beaver is a better mascot for an engineering school than Duck is for anyone; Oregon has a law school that is the competitor of my employer, while Oregon State is sans law school). But I don't actively root against Oregon, and so I wouldn't gain much satisfaction from ruining its chance at a magical season.
Meanwhile, Cal earned a lot of respect with its stellar defensive performance. So Cal didn't get embarrassed, and Oregon is still ranked #1. I can live with that.
Besides, if Cal had beaten Oregon, Stanford would be that much closer to winning the Pac-10 this year!
