Future Economic Consequences of Traumatic Brain Injury

By Bruce Stern

ADVERTISEMENTS

It has been an extremely busy week for me. Last Thursday, I was honored to have been invited to address the Tennessee Association for Justice at their traumatic brain injury seminar in Nashville, Tennessee. I spoke about the economic consequences of traumatic brain injury stressing the point that people with cognitive disabilities from a traumatic brain injury earn less and work less than people without a cognitive disability. I shared with the audience data from the U.S. Department of Labor which not only supports the above statement but also demonstrates that this is true for both males and females and is true across all educational backgrounds. Thus it is important for neuro-lawyers to appreciate that when representing traumatic brain injury survivors, even when those individuals have returned to full-time employment, there will be a significant future economic loss in earning capacity.

From Nashville, I flew to California to give the same presentation at the request of the California Brain Injury Association. The Brain Injury Association was running its annual legal and medical conference on traumatic brain injury. The faculty included not only lawyers, but physicians and rehabilitation specialists in the field of treating persons with acquired traumatic brain injury.
