Labor Heritage to Honor Trumka, Lucy and Nussbaum

For more than two decades, the Labor Heritage Foundation (LHF) has preserved and promoted the cultural heritage of American workers through art, music, poetry, written works, theater and artistic works. Tomorrow, the foundation will honor three inspiring labor leaders at its annual ?Evening of Labor Honors? fundraiser at the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., beginning at 5 p.m.

This year?s honorees are AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) President and former AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer William Lucy and Working America Director Karen Nussbaum.

LHF Executive Director Darryl! Moch says of the honorees:

We want to thank President Trumka and honor his leadership and the team he has assembled to move the union movement into the next era of challenges and triumphs for working Americans.

It is long overdue that we honor Bill Lucy. He has been in the forefront of the union and civil rights movements. We want to appreciate his leadership and his life commitment to AFSCME, to unions overall and to working people everywhere.

We honor Karen Nussbaum because in many ways she represents who we are as an arts and culture nonprofit in the labor and progressive communities. She inspired the “9 to 5″ movie and all the products that followed. I remember after I saw the movie and heard the song, I expected that we all could work 9 to 5 and still enjoy life, too.

Moch says the Labor Heritage Foundation, founded in 1983, is committed to highlighting the accomplishments of the movement and promoting the arts and culture of working people. Each year, for example, the LHF sponsors the  Great Labor Arts Exchange. For four days, some 100 union and social justice activists participate in programs that combine union mobilization and outreach with songs, skits, art, poetry, theater, posters, cartoons and film.
