There’s a lot of news being produced lately, especially in light of the “wreckage” brought on by the political Tea-nami in D.C. I don’t want to miss top stories out there, and I found a WordPress plugin that will [hopefully] allow me to more easily stay on top of things without laboriously going through posts manually.
This particular posting is a bit of a catch-up; hopefully future such postings will be better formatted. Also, I intend to include eligibility-based stories as well.
While I am doing this for my own news archive, your comments are certainly appreciated, even directly: phil [at] therightsideoflife [dot] com. Also, I don’t currently intend to email my email list each time one of these posts is produced; it is an automatic process, after all.
I think it’s important to stay on top of the news, and maybe this will be one more way to do it.
Thanks,
-Phil

Lest you doubted.
The GOP takeover of the House holds the nightmare scenario for Democrats of putting Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) in charge of the House Oversight Committee. The Supreme Court today rejected the first preliminary challenge to Obamacare today. They said a federal appeals court has yet to consider the case.
During Elena Kagan?s confirmation hearings Republican senators raised concerns about Kagan hearing a legal challenge to the health care law if she was confirmed to the Supreme Court. Today Justice Kagan joined with her fellow justices in rejecting the review.
The AP reported:The Supreme Court has turned down the first preliminary challenge to President Barack Obama?s health care overhaul.
The decision Monday to reject an appeal from a former Republican state lawmaker in California was no surprise because a federal appeals court has yet to consider the case. The high court almost never reviews cases before the issues have been aired in lower courts.
Of more significance is the sign that all the justices took part in rejecting the appeal. New Justice Elena Kagan refused to say during her confirmation hearings whether she would take part in the court?s deliberations over the health care law. Kagan was Obama?s solicitor general before joining the court.
The court has noted Kagan?s absence in more than two dozen other cases, suggesting that she voted on the health care appeal.
Kagan has stepped aside from cases in which she was involved as a Justice Department official before joining the court.
- Sen. Coats Starts with a Bang – Wants to ?Reform? the Filibuster
Less than a week after being sent back to the Senate after a 10-year absence, 67 year-old former Senator / DC lobbyist / Senator-elect Dan Coats apparently feels that it is critical to launch his new tenure with an assault on the filibuster.
Hmmm? Way to signal to the world that the establishment got it right in convincing you to run, and that you are ready to hit the halls of Congress and fight for limited government, Senator.
In an interview with NPR on November 4, and then again just yesterday on Fox News, Coats suggested that the filibuster should be ended on the ?motion to proceed.? In other words, he would allow the filibuster on the final vote, but not on the motion to bring the matter to the Senate floor for debate. His reasoning is that ?[t]here?s just too much need for moving forward with action to address our serious economic situation and a number of other issues to not go forward on that basis.?
Really? Right, because what we really need is for it to be easier for the Senate to pass more laws. What more do we need than MORE laws?
This kind of talk is decidedly un-conservative. For those who are attracted to the siren call of a one-day Republican majority bringing ?good? legislation to the floor? don?t be. There is very little ?good? legislation every offered by these clowns and if you believe in limited government, the last thing you want is for the ?cooling saucer? that is supposed to be the U.S. Senate to become a microwave oven for fast-tracking legislation.
Senator Coats is a good man by all accounts. And he will vote the right way on a lot of issues. But this kind of thing is a sure sign that his inclination is to ?work together? with his Senate colleagues to ?get things done.? Anytime we hear that kind of rhetoric, we should run away screaming because ?getting things done? means 99 times out of 100 that government expands and freedom is lost.
Sure, if we get a majority and miraculously have leaders with the will to boldly cut Washington back – by across the board cuts, eliminating departments, reforming entitlements or any number of options – it will be frustrating to face a filibuster. But we win by taking it to the people. You don?t win by empowering government to do more and to do it more often.
To anyone who wants to scale back the filibuster – there is one answer. One. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.
If you are for filibuster reform, you are not conservative, and you should be primaried and sent home at the next available opportunity – which unfortunately in this case, is not until 2016. But maybe Sen. Coats will wake up and realize that his ?idea? is not that novel and is favored more by his liberal colleagues than his Republican ones.
- Boehner to make debt-limit hike vote stand-alone
Gauntlet, thrown.
In the past, House Speakers have treated votes for raising the US debt limit like pirates legendarily treated their loot; they buried it by attaching it to other must-pass legislation. That allowed members to rail against the increase in national debt while explaining that they had no choice but to vote for the increased limits [...] - Senate Scorecard: RedState vs NRSC
The time has come for the Senate Republicans to begin thinking about what to do with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which this last cycle was run by Senator John Cornyn along with bureaucrat Rob Jesmer. Before any Republican endorses that team to go ahead and run the committee for another cycle, I urge them to consider alternatives.
The NRSC has the name and the databases to be a tremendous force for good for the party, much as the RGA was this cycle. But to do so it has to make the right decisions with those resources that it has. I submit that it could have done much better this year.
The NRSC?s scorecard:
State Result CA L – General CO L – Primary DE L – Primary FL L – Party Switch IN W KY L – Primary NH W PA L – Party Switch UT No primary position The Cornyn/Jesmer team went 3-5 in the primaries and 2-1 in the generals. That?s a lot of primary elections to have spent on, throwing away money that could have gone to general election winners. It?s only remarkable that they didn?t do anything in Utah, honestly.
But here?s RedState?s scorecard, where the site (and not just one writer or Erick Erickson) took a position:
State Result CA L – Primary CO L – General DE No primary position FL W IN L – Primary KY No primary position NH No primary position PA W UT W RedState went 4-2 in the primaries, and 3-1 in the generals. Where we as a site split (Kentucky, New Hampshire, and Delaware) the grassroots conservative pick won a general, lost a primary badly, and lost a general election badly. We picked our spots and avoided two big losses. The NRSC showed no such restraint in states like Pennsylvania and Florida.
Should he be retained at NRSC, Senator Cornyn ought to be begging for RS as a group to dictate primary strategy. We have better strategic sense than they had, with no loss in general election efficiency.

- Defeated Democrats Write Letter to Pelosi Urging Her to Step Down
A group of defeated democrats wrote Speaker Pelosi today and urged her to step aside from a leadership position. Democrats suffered their worst defeat in decades last week at the polls.
Republicans are hoping the failed Democrat will stick around.

FOX News reported:FOX has obtained a letter being penned by defeated House Democrats that implores House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to step aside.
The letter is now circulating Capitol Hill and has not yet been sent to the Speaker. FOX has obtained draft language of the letter.
In the draft of the letter, the members say that they were ?victimized by a national wave of resentment toward Democrats, a wave that ensnared you along with us.?
The letter goes on to say ?Madam Speaker, fairly or unfairly, Republicans made you the face of the resentment and disagreement in our races. While we commend your years of service to our party and your leadership through many tough times, we respectfully ask that you step aside as the top Democrat in the House.?
The letter says that the defeated members ?fear that Republicans will further demonize you, and in so doing, they will scare potential candidates out. The prospect of having to run against their own party leadership, in addition to their Republican opponent is simply too daunting.?
The lawmakers also say that ?one mark of a strong leader is the ability to discern when it is time to pass the baton? and calls this a ?dark hour.?
The letter closes asking Pelosi to step aside.
Who do you suppose is the lucky democrat who gets to deliver this letter?
