Law Departments: Stand Up and Be Counted

The 591 legal departments in the third release of the General Counsel Metrics, LLC global benchmark survey, which was distributed last month, had 17,700 lawyers and 14,152 other legal staff. Dozens had one or two lawyers; others count their lawyers into the hundreds. They reported a total of US$17.1 billion in total legal spending in support of US$4.7 trillion of revenue ? almost the GDP of China.

The quick, confidential, online survey asks for six pieces of law department data:

- the number of your lawyers, paralegals, and other staff (as of Dec. 31, 2009);
- your internal and external legal spend last year; and
- your company?s revenue last year (in US$ as of Dec. 31, 2009).

The full report has 25 charts (one for each benchmark metric) and five tables, all with metrics that are normalized and aggregated. It contains ratios for industry benchmarks as well as to benchmarks for departments by country, number of lawyers, region, and revenue. Participants will receive their report at no cost in late October. Many custom reports are also available. Survey conducted by General Counsel Metrics, LLC.
