Is the US now the home of barristers' chambers? (Virtual law firms)

ADVERTISEMENTS
We're seeing more of these virtual law firms, where the lawyers can work at home, or work anywhere for that matter, keep 85% of what they bill, and contribute 15% to pay for back office support (billing, admin stuff, etc.).  Sometimes they strike me as akin to chambers more than law firms.  The lawyers may have totally independent practices, rarely see each other, not share clients, and so on.  One question I keep wondering about is this: suppose you were a talented law office administrator but not a lawyer.  Could you set up one of these businesses and keep 15% for yourself?  That's probably fee sharing with a non-lawyer.  (I'm admittedly not an expert on the economics and logistics of UK-style chambers, so I offer this as a loose analogy.)
