Avandia restrictions tightened by FDA but not recalled

By Jamie G. Goldstein

ADVERTISEMENTS

The FDA announced today that it is restricting the prescription drug Avandia to users with type II diabetes that have no other means of controlling the disease. This announcement comes after months of reviewing the drugs safety by the FDA. Moments after the FDA made the announcement the FDA's European counterpart went one step further to try and recall the medication in Europe. The first step in accomplishing this is suspending marketing approval of Avandia in Europe, which has been done.

Avandia has been linked to heart attacks, fluid retention, congestive heart failure and death in many people who took the drug and believed it was safe. Many lawsuits have been filed on behalf of these victims and it is presumed many more will be filed as more information about the dangers of Avandia becomes available.

If you or someone you know is taking Avandia, contact the prescribing doctor to determine if it is in the patient's best interest to continue taking the Avandia. The doctor will be able to help decide if the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks.
