At The Faculty Lounge, Jeff Lipshaw has a post about hypomania and lawyering. Over the years, I've had quite a few discussions with risk management types about whether an inordinate number of highly successful lawyers have up-and-down mood swings that don't reach the full blown stages that require medical intervention. I'm no expert, and my experience is just an accumulation of anecdotes. But I did have reason to look into whether lawyer assistance programs have much to offer lawyers suffering from mood disorders and several people who work in that area told me that the discussion of mood disorders is usually just tacked onto discussions of alcohol and substance abuse. Does anyone out there know of any systematic treatments of mood disorders in the legal profession?
