Derek Jeter got to first base in the Rays game yesterday (9/16/10) by making believe that a pitch had hit his arm, when in fact it had hit his bat. As the NYT reported this morning:
Rays Manager Joe Madden was ejected after arguing that a pitch from Chad Quails hit the knob of Jeter?s bat, bouncing into fair territory, and not his forearm. Asked [after the game] where the ball hit, Jeter smiled, "The bat," he said. And nowhere else? ... "Vibration," Jeter said. "And acting." The umpires convened, upholding the original call, as Jeter stood on first base thinking, "Don?t change your mind."
... Maddon called it a heady play. "If our guys did it, I would have applauded that, too," Madden said. "It?s a great performance on his part."
