Porteous Impeachment Trial Begins

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

A rare impeachment trial of a sitting federal judge, G. Thomas Porteous of Louisiana, opened in the U.S. Senate today.

House members who are serving as prosecutors portrayed Judge Porteous as corrupt and guilty of a decades-long pattern of unethical behavior, the Associated Press reported.

The judges’ lawyers contended his conduct did not warrant impeachment. Lawyer Jonathan Turley maintained that Judge Porteous’ actions do not match the Constitution’s “high crimes and misdemeanors” standard for impeachment.

Judge Porteous stands accused of accepting cash improperly and of lying during his confirmation proceedings before the Senate (see Gavel Grab for more.)
