: Legal Pad | LALatest Bay-Delta suit tries new tactic: public trust

Three environmental groups filed a suit yesterday against the Department of Water Resources and the California State Water Resources Control Board in Sacramento County Superior Court, calling for an injunction against water diversion from the Bay-Delta, alleging a violation of the public trust doctrine.
Michael Jackson, an attorney representing the groups, said the decline of king salmon runs in recent years was one of the reasons the lawsuit was filed.
The suit says there are chronic violations of water quality standards in the Delta, and that the DWR has failed to comply with existing water rules.
The lawsuit was filed by the California Water Impact Network, the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance and AquAlliance.
