Law and the Politics of Sexuality: Did Someone Say Nudity? The Puritan Ethic in America Caught Between the Realities of Modern Life and Technological Advance

By Andis Kaulins

ADVERTISEMENTS

The law and politics of sexuality in the USA is something that is hard for outsiders to understand. Many Europeans often shake their heads in puzzlement at what many regard to be immature attitudes in America toward sexuality, accompanied by double standards exercised with regard to things that are regarded in Europe to be a part of normal life.

The Puritan attitude towards nudity is one of them, an attitude which is being strongly forced by the government, as Ira Teinowitz outlines at TheWrap.com in his posting FCC Renews Its Battle to Oversee Indecency.

When one compares American Puritan values to the gross and permissible brutality and violence permitted in the media, the broad extent of crime, drugs and antisocial behavior in U.S. society in general, the widespread availability of pornography on the Internet and the increasing technological development and use of things such as X-ray vision for surveillance at airports via "indecent gadgets" which are on their way to becoming ubiquitous, one can only shake one's head in dismay at a culture "shamefully" caught between the realities of modern life and the antiquated Puritan ethic of another era.
