Huntington Beach school board member ordered to change election statement

Ocean View School District board member John Briscoe will have to change his election statement, according to a Superior Court judge, because it violates election law.

According to court documents, candidate statements should not "make reference to other candidates... or to another candidate's qualifications, character or activities." Mary Beth Arnold, who filed a writ of mandate petition asking the Registrar of Voters to intervene in the matter of Briscoe's statement, lists seven instances where Briscoe refers to other candidates.

Arnold also filed the petition as an unlimited civil case, which means she wants at least $25,000 to cover attorney's fees and other relief. Court documents did not say whether or not Arnold will receive any compensation.
