SoCal Edison sued for alleged role in fire

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Several cases against Southern California Edison regarding its alleged role in causing the 2007 Grass Valley Fire will be heard jointly by Superior Court Judge Janet Frangie in San Bernardino.

The original suit, filed in 2008 on behalf of Craig Carlson and 22 other plaintiffs, says the fire was caused by power lines being too close to vegetation. The suit claims that SoCal Edison knew the risks of vegetation being that close to the lines, but did nothing to reduce the risks.  SoCal Edison is also accused of collecting funds that were supposed to go toward maintaining vegetation in the neighborhood but failed to use those funds appropriately.

According to John Girardi of Girardi and Keese, the Carlson case, as well as the Adler case, also being handled by his firm, another suit or two being handled by another attorney and approximately two dozen being brought by insurance companies looking for compensation are among the parties. The trial date has been set for Dec. 12, 2011.
