Thomas Harrington, the head of the FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch, has been named Associate Deputy Director, the bureau announced on Friday.
Harrington, a 25-year veteran of the bureau, replaces Timothy Murphy, who was recently appointed Deputy Director. John Pistole had been Deputy Director before his confirmation as Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration.
As Executive Assistant Director, Harrington’s previous post, he oversaw the bureau’s largest operational division that handles criminal and national security matters.
Before that, Harrington was Associate Executive Assistant Director for the National Security Branch, which he helped establish in 2005, and Deputy Assistant Director for counterterrorism in the Operational Support Branch. Harrington created the National Threat Center and the 24/7 Counterterrorism Watch Center and oversaw the expansion of the Joint Terrorism Task Forces.
Harrington joined the bureau in 1984 in the Denver Division and became a supervisor in the Philadelphia Division’s Economic Crimes Unit in 1993. He was later promoted to assistant special agent in charge for organized crime, drugs, and violent crime.
?Throughout his 25 years with the Bureau, T.J. has distinguished himself as an innovative leader. He has led our efforts to become a more intelligence-led organization and initiated proven management practices to track progress, address gaps, and evaluate successes for our highest priorities and initiatives,? FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III said in a statement.
