: The GavelGinsburg: ?Not Retiring Anytime Soon?
By Peter Hardin
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has been the subject of widespread speculation about possible retirement, told the Associated Press she has no plans to retire anytime soon.
The AP article described Justice Ginsburg, who has battled cancer and recently experienced the death of her husband, this way:
“Ginsburg appeared to be in good health and good spirits, even with the strain of her husband’s death and a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2009. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy for the cancer and was hospitalized on two other occasions last year but is maintaining an active travel schedule that is taking her across the country at least twice this summer.”
Upon the recent retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens, Justice Ginsburg is now the senior member of the court at age 77.
Regarding the prospect that Solicitor General Elena Kagan may be confirmed to the high court this week, adding a third woman to the nine-member bench for the first time, Justice Ginsburg said, “To me, it’s one of the most exhilarating developments.”
