Chefs Sue Over Olive Oil's Dubious Virtue

By Eric Lipman

ADVERTISEMENTS
Claiming to be a virgin when you're not can result in a get out of jail free card for your husband over in Europe. But false claims of extra virginity can get you sued by "Top Chef" Dave Martin, right here in America. Martin and other chefs and restaurants have filed a class action complaint in California Superior Court, alleging that a host of olive oil manufacturers have been bottling up inferior product, labeling it "extra virgin," and selling it for much more than it's actually worth. The report on the suit over at Courthouse News Service notes that the complaint cites a study done by researchers at the University of California at Davis Olive Center, which found some of the olive oil "had defective flavors, such as rancid, fusty and musty." Apparently, "fusty" is actually a word. The plaintiffs are suing for fraud, negligent misrepresentation, breach of warranty and false advertising, and are represented by these guys. Popeye was unavailable for comment at press time. (Come on, you knew it was coming.)
