: HealthBlawgPan Mass Challenge - Less Than Three Weeks Away
By David Harlow
I always feel most fit and healthy this time of year. Why? Because I've been training for the Pan-Mass Challenge, the annual two-day, 200-mile, bicycle fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute that takes place the first weekend in August every year. It's the granddaddy of all athletic fundraisers, and 100% of all contributions made to sponsor my ride will go directly to the Dana Farber. Generous event sponsors and rider registration fees underwrite all of the administrative expenses.
This is my seventh year riding in the PMC ... but my first on a recumbent bicycle. The training has been going very well, and has included in recent weeks several rides in the 75 to 95 mile range -- with some significant hills. The 95-mile ride was along the Climb to the Clouds route from Concord, MA to Mt. Wachusett and back, through apple-orchard country and other gorgeous New England landscapes. (My recumbent and I hit a top speed of 50 mph on the big downhill just after the farthest point on that ride.) This past weekend, my riding buddy Hillel and I rode from Newton, MA to Palmer, MA -- over 75 miles -- through beautiful towns and state parks (and over a good deal of newly-repaved back roads; thank you, Recovery Act).
We're going into the home stretch of training for the PMC, and I thank all of you out there who have already joined in the effort by sponsoring my ride to benefit this worthy cause. If you haven't done so yet, please take a moment to learn more about the PMC by reading my PMC rider profile and add your contribution to those of my other sponsors. This year's goal is $31 million. Please help me and my 5000 fellow riders meet this goal.
Thanks, and I hope to see you on the road!
