: Legal Pad | LASoCal woman sentenced for self-texting threats
By Richard Binder
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Especially one with an unlimited text plan.
Jeanne Mundango Manunga, a 25-year-old woman from Santa Ana, was sentenced to a year in jail last Friday for sending hundreds of threatening text messages to herself, under the guise of her ex-boyfriend and his sister-in-law with the aim to get them arrested.
After their breakup in 2008, according to Deputy District Attorney Mena Guirguis, Manunga took out a prepaid cell phone in her ex-boyfriend's sister-in-law's name, and started sending the threatening text messages to her regular cell phone. She then reported the threats to three separate police precincts and claimed both the ex and the sister-in-law were behind the threats.
The tactic did work: both were arrested for making criminal threats and ended up paying thousands of dollars in bail. The sister-in-law was arrested three times and spent some time in custody before coming up with bail money. Eventually, the two discovered Manunga had purchased the phone in the sister-in-law's name and reported it to the authorities.
