This post was written by John Heckman: "A recent article in the New York Times featured a new Israeli program called "Soluto."  This lets you easily select what programs load when you boot and offers to either "Pause" them (they start manually later when you use the program) or "Delay" them so that they start after boot is complete.

The main reason that this can be effective is that many if not most software makers today load a stub of their program that either checks for updates or pre-loads sections of the program on startup instead of when the program loads. This is a form of "cheating" in that a program, say, Adobe, loads a stub that takes 2 seconds to load, then when you open Acrobat it opens "faster" because part of it is pre-loaded.  This may or may not be efficient. If it is a program that you use all the time and may open and close a half-dozen times a day, it does save you time overall. But if it is a program that you use once a week or less, it costs you time overall..."
