Follow up: Lake of the Ozarks developer pleads guilty to employment tax fraud; ordered to pay nearly $1million in fines and back taxes. KC Business Journal.

Michael Schlup pleaded guilty June 26 to 14 felony counts of failing to deduct state employer and withholding tax and not filing an employer withholding tax return. Schlup, whose businesses include Schlup Investments Inc. and Plaza Gardens on the Lake Inc., avoided a five-year prison sentence with his guilty plea and instead had the prison term suspended in lieu of probation. Investigators found that as many as 30 undocumented employees worked at the site, laboring for 70 hours a week and paid about $8 an hour in cash.

The Missouri Attorney General and Camden County Attorney handled the cases.
