: Jolly LawgerCalifornia Western School of Law Admitted Scholars Reception
By Steve Pirates
On Friday I had the privilege of attending a reception dinner held for the admitted scholars for the Fall 08 entering class (c/o 2011) as a 1L to meet some of the admitted students and to talk to them about Cal Western. It was a definite flashback for me, since this time last year I attended the same type of event, but from the other side of the table, as it were.
The event was held in the ballroom of the San Diego Counter Bar Association in Downtown San Diego. There was a nice band playing some jazz, some easy listening, and I think they slipped in a Megadeth cover about halfway through the cocktail hour. The dinner itself was fantastic, salmon, steak and a twice-baked potato, with asparagus and a carrot.
I was very impressed with the range of admitted scholars that I had a chance to speak with. Many of them had impressive backgrounds, both academically and personally. I really look forward to seeing them around campus this August. I think they will be great additions to the student body at California Western.
During the event I noticed that the upperclassmen who were attending the event were the same ones who had been 1Ls at the dinner I went to. It makes me happy to know people who have a good amount of school spirit and pride. I mentioned to my friend Billie that in all likelihood we were turning into those people, and would likely be around next year, and the year after.
I also had a great time talking with some of the faculty and administration in a relaxed setting. My civil procedure professor was there, and we chatted a little bit while talking to the admitted scholars. The whole dinner really reminded me of one of the reasons that I chose California Western over a higher “ranked” school. Accessibility. Cal Western made me feel very welcome from the outset, and they haven’t stopped since. I’ve never had a problem getting time with any professors, or anyone in admin when I’ve had a question or an issue. I think there is a big difference between a school that will “let” you go, or a school that will give you money to go, and a school that WANTS to you to. California Western falls in the last category, and I know from talking to my classmates that they don’t just give attention to a select few, but that they make sure that everyone is taken care of.
It was a good dinner. Afterwards I went downtown and met up with my fiance and some friends and we tried absinthe for the first time. Everyone hated it except for me and Kate’s co-worker’s wife Libby. Both of us like licorice. And that is what absinthe tastes like. All in all a great night.
