Power Couple Crush

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

This weekend is HLS's first Celebration of Public Interest, which is kind of a combo alumni reunion/uber-conference. I spent almost all day there yesterday, and I'm going for another half-day today. Yesterday was a full-on SuperMom day: two different friend babysitters, Daddy in the evening, and I just brought her with me for the lunch with Jennifer Granholm, governor of Michigan, and her husband, Dan Mulhern. (She slept through it. Woo.)

They are the best power couple I've ever seen. They're...funny! They haven't had the personality sucked out of them by politics, and they're funny, self-deprecating, and clearly love each other a lot. And they believe in the power of real political leadership. Me too.

Also, when they got married they took each others' last names as their middle names. That's cool.

The best part, though, was the Slightly Inappropriate Spitzer Moment. Mulhern was talking about how all the First Spouses meet up sometimes, and said off-hand that it's been a hard week since he knew Spitzer's wife. Granholm then busted out, "I told him, that will never happen," pointing at herself. (As in, I will not do hookers.) The audience got wide-eyed and cracked up. Our dean, a Spitzer friend, had no expression. Then THEY HIGH FIVED! And Granholm added, "Not an issue, not an issue." It was awesome.

I clearly need to get a poster of these two for my locker. I hope Dan and I are like them when we're big shots.
