Soon to Be Lawsuit of the Day: 'Sorry Ma'am, Grave's Full'

By Eric Lipman

We're all well familiar with the airlines' policies of overbooking flights, counting on the fact that some percentage of passengers won't show up. But when you're dealing with burial plots rather than economy seats, it's a pretty good bet the person who reserved is gonna come a'callin' at some point. In Fair Oaks, Calif., however, a cemetery has informed a sweet-looking old lady named Lillas Hawkins that the plot she bought and paid for 23 years ago is currently occupied. And the company that runs the cemetery -- Dignity Memorial (you can't make this stuff up) -- has no intention of asking the current resident to move. Despite the fact that her next door neighbor is none other than Ms. Hawkins's dear departed husband. Dignity did offer to either dig up Hawkins's husband, Durwood, or to bury her right on top of him. The company disclaims responsibility for the mix-up, contending that the burial plot was "double sold" sometime in the 1980s, before it had purchased this particular cemetery. Though that's likely cold comfort to Lillas. (No, I didn't. Did I? Guess I did.)
