Practical Paralegalism's Recommended Reading This Week

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
I blog for paralegals - and legal assistants, legal secretaries, legal staffers and attorneys who want to get to know us better - to share information they might find helpful for professional development, or a much needed laugh during a hectic week working for lawyers. Once a week I share links to a half dozen or so articles focusing on legal news and humor, practice tips and technology.

Here's this week's list:

"Air Force is Looking for Paralegals" (Paralegal Blaw Blaw Blaw) ~ Lori Paul provides all of the details for anyone interested in a legal support career in the military.

"Top 5 Social Media Ethics Concerns for Lawyers" (Lawyerist) ~ "And Their Staff" could be added to the title of this post. From violating your state's rules of professional conduct to resorting to "pretexting" to investigate someone online, review these ethics traps carefully.

"AP Stylebook Adds 42 New Guidelines for Social Media" (Mashable) ~ For you grammar geeks like me, who obsess for hours over "web site" versus "website" - it's the latter. But smart phone is two words. If I want to be able to spell in today's virtual world, I'll be ordering the 2010 AP Stylebook. Even if you're not a grammar geek, as a legal professional, you still need to know how to spell these new-fangled social media terms for motions and briefs. They are not going away.

"6 Seriously Strange Ways to Make Money Online" (PC World) ~ In a down economy, creative ways to supplement our income are always welcome, although I draw the line at searching for smut online. (Besides, I don't have to look - it comes to me in the form of anonymous porn spammers who are the reason I have to moderate blog comments in the first place.) Did you know that you can get paid for participating in a virtual focus group for attorneys - or answering text-message questions, such as "What is the best way to get my cat out of my dryer hose?"

"Use Coffee Grounds to Touch Up Furniture Scuffs" (Lifehacker) ~ I've got teens, so all of my wood furniture is one big scuff. This will be a fun summer project for them.

Favorite Practical Paralegalism post from this week last year: "Paralegals Can Help Raise Law Firm Revenue"

If you've got a link to an article that you think Practical Paraleglism readers would enjoy or find helpful, please feel free to send it to me at lynne.devenny@gmail.com.
