What Is US News Law School Ranking Malpractice?

By Dan Filler

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you're a law school with lousy numbers for students employed at graduation, what do you do?  Do you admit your problems to US News, or simply remain silent?  How would it affect your decisioin if you knew that US News would simply take your 9-month-after-graduation number and subtract 30% to extrapolate your at-graduation number?

Paul Caron, over at Tax Prof, suggests that deans at certain law schools aren't maximizing their schools' US News rankings because they either 1) have not spent enough time studying Bob Morse's ranking methodology; or 2) have an overwhelming, and unhelpful, need to share the fact that their graduation employment number is actually more than 30% lower than their 9 month number.  In either case, he  suggests that the schools are commiting US News ranking malpractice.

Paul has some good looking charts and graphs and he names names! (Plus, he shares Alabama's explanation of how it got screwed mishandled by US News this year.)
